Poor speech doesn’t necessarily mean poor intelligence…

Posted on 30th June 2010 in Natural health for children

It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that a child who doesn’t speak, also doesn’t hear, or understand, or that he doesn’t have a sophisticated imagination, or perhaps that he doesn’t even think about conversations around him.

Through the last few years with my son, I have sometimes experienced long delays between asking a question and getting a reply. Luckily, I had learnt that this delay – or in fact a lack of reply – does not mean the child doesn’t want to!

In the last few weeks, we have taken our little man’s therapy program into a new phase, focussing on speech.  And wow, have I learnt all the more how true it is that we just don’t know what is going on in a child’s mind when speech isn’t fully developed!

Gryffin is kicking some major goals with speech this month, his program has moved into a new phase to help with this. He had his first sleep over at my parents house on the weekend, my lucky mum woke to Gryffin saying ‘hello darling, I love you’! Where’s my one of those!!!!??
I captured some video of him cutting with scissors and jumping on the jumping castle last week, it’s all in Part 3 of the doco…!

Teaching your own child is easy and fun!

Posted on 22nd June 2010 in Natural health for children

I have been teaching Gryffin to read at home for some time now and have recently introduced a maths program.  This was not done to have a child genius!   It was not done so I could show off about my son’s literacy and numeracy.  It was done to help him to learn, and after we’d been doing it for just a little while I realised we were actually doing it for fun!

It is quite ridiculously easy for any parent to teach a little child. There are all sorts of reasons why it is easy, but the main reason is that the little child is DESPERATE for information!  Literally craving to learn, and so once you give it to a child – of any ability – in the right size, format, speed and if you do it regularly, the results are stunning.  You can see some of this in action on this website.

Not only is it easy, but it is huge fun for the parent and the child, builds confidence and helps to build learning pathways for future learning too!

In praise of Obliphica

Posted on 16th June 2010 in Natural health for children

Great word.

“Obliphica also known as Sea Buckthorn which contains the powerful Hippophae Oil is a rare fruit, which grows in the Himalayas and Siberia. Rich in natural Vitamin E, Obliphica oil is one of the most effective natural anti-oxidants known. Its natural Vitamin C and moisturizing oils … bring phenomenal results …Its anti-oxidant qualities help it to reduce the damage to hair and skin caused by exposure to sunlight and air pollution. Obliphica is most effective in restoring damaged hair immediately. ” -www.obliphica.com

I learnt about this recently from Gryffin’s hairdresser who gave us a sample of Obliphica oil to help with his brittle, often matted hair on the back of his head, caused by several years of swimming in our – supposedly non-harmfully chemicalled – spa.

Raymundo Veras book – now available!

Posted on 11th June 2010 in Natural health for children

“Children of Dreams, Children of Hope” is a book I was thrilled to discover when my son was about 8 months old.  This book, written by Raymundo Veras, explains why we should keep our dreams and aspirations for children with Down syndrome sky high.  Raymundo’s work with these children proved that extraordinary improvements are possible in all areas when this chromosomal condition is treated as a ‘brain injury’.

Many people have asked me why this is the case… this book provides the answers, and more.

The book was written at a time when the term ‘mongoloids’ was still in use…..

A wonderful findd…

Posted on 7th June 2010 in Natural health for children

How extraordinary that it was not until after I had written my book, after I had spent almost 3 years researching help for my son, that I found the Mindd Foundation.  Here is an Australian foundation dedicated to enlightening parents, carers and practitioners about the ‘biomedical’ approach to health care.  About how a healthy home can result in a happy family, and how we might prevent and address a multitude of health and brain-related issues through parental choices, and informed healthcare.

Extraordinarily, almost everything I have done for my son is advocated by the Mindd Foundation, and Gryffin is living proof of the validity of their message.

Here are some facts from this amazing and dynamic group of dedicated Australians:

1 in 6 Australian children have a learning, behavioural or immune disorder

Food allergies and intolerances in children can be misdiagnosed as ADHD

Asthma, Allergies, ADHD, Autism, Diabetes and Cancer have
more than doubled in Australian children over the past 20 years.

So what are we doing wrong?  Isn’t it time we all found out and helped spread the word that something can be done to reverse this damaging spiral of events?  Our kids – and their kids – are so worth it…

‘Australian children are facing an epidemic of neuro-biological disease driven by nutritional deficiencies and toxicity. Naturally Better offers parents hope with real healthcare solutions that can help with ADHD, Autism,
learning delay and optimal health for every child.’
