Book extract – Glyconutrients chapter

Posted on 25th November 2010 in Natural health for children

We’ve had Gryffin on a range of nutritional supplements since he arrived, and I know that these have had a tremendous effect on his health. He’ll be 4 in a few days time, and I am still amazed that this little boy – who is supposed to have a compromised immune system – is hardly ever sick. He hasn’t had antibiotics since he was 1 – and even then he’s only ever had them twice.

One of the supplements which I believe to be key to his health is glyconutrient powder. Following is an extract from the chapter in my book which explains how these work.

FROM THE CHAPTER ON GLYCONUTRIENTS

Definitions –
‘glyco’ – Prefix used in chemical compounds to indicate relationship to sugar or the presence of glycerol or similar substance

‘nutrient’ – 1. Food or any substance that supplies the body with elements necessary for metabolism*. 2. Nourishing; supplying nutriment – Taber’s Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary

Gryffin started taking (glyconutrients) at around 2 weeks old.  The person who supplied me this product explained its function like this – our cells are coated in a material made from glyconutrients.  This coating allows the cells to communicate with one another and in times of stress or injury, it‘s this communication between and amongst the cells which allows and promotes healing.  Our modern diet, depletion of soil quality, etc have all lead to a decrease in the prevalence of these glyconutrients which would normally be found in many of the foods we commonly eat.  Berries and breast milk contain glyconutrients, for example, but possibly were once a richer source than they are now.

The quality and quantity of these nutrients coming to us through our foods these days is so poor that the communication between cells is impeded.  It was explained to me that if for example someone tried to write the word ‘help’ to another person (figure 1), without being able to use straight lines, the word would not look like ‘help’ at all, instead it would look like a series of squiggles with no meaning (figure 2).  Therefore a cell trying to ask its neighbours for help, without the use of a fully formed ‘alphabet’, might be left to suffer unaided and possibly die.

figure 2

Having established that my son was undernourished, it seemed logical to me that if his cells were not able to communicate properly, all manner of damage could ensue and – when the brain is growing at such an alarming rate in such a young baby, I could see the urgency of nourishing him in every way possible, glyconutrients being at the top of my list from this point on.Easily administered, glyconutrient powder became part of Gryffin’s meal preparation all the way from exclusive breastfeeding to solids, by which time I had become an expert in ‘spiking’ his meals with an array of potions!  As soon as he could chew confidently, we also gave him the (fruit and vegetable boosted) gummy bears daily.

*Definition – metabolism: The chemical processes occurring within a living cell or organism that are necessary for the maintenance of life. In metabolism some substances are broken down to yield energy for vital processes while other substances, necessary for life, are synthesised*.  – education.yahoo.com
*Definition – synthesise: to produce a substance chemically in plants or animals.- dictionary.cambridge.org

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
These products are not available in retail outlets – certainly not in Australia anyway. I’ve been helping families around the world to access glyconutrients for the past 2 1/2 years, especially those in countries where they cannot order the products online. Raw Food Challenge – Chocolate Pudding!
Posted on 25th November 2010 in Natural health for children
OK, wrapping your head around this will probably be a challenge – it was for me, but it went down a treat at dinner last night! My only comment would be that a dash of pure vanilla essence would probably cover the remaining avocado flavour, other than that it’s a beauty!
From TheRawFoodSite.com
Simple and Sinful Chocolate Pudding
Here’s a recipe as posted on the Raw Food Lifestyle bulletin board by Sim, one of our raw food moderators and a raw food chef.
Ingredients:
  • 2 avocados,
  • ½ cup raw carob or raw cacao or a combination, and
  • 1 cup (12-14) of unsoaked medjool dates. The softer and squishier the better.
    (Forget using soaked deglet dates. They’re not going to give you the right result.)
1. Blend all the ingredients until the mixture is smooth, creamy, and has no more lumps.
2. VERY IMPORTANT: Do a taste test! Add more avocado to make it richer and creamier, add more dates for sweetness, and/or more cacao if you’re a chocolate fiend.
This will keep for 2-3 days in the refrigerator. Although there is no way it would last at my house for more than a few minutes.
If you really want to be decadent, make the following and spoon it over the chocolate pudding. To be honest, this dessert served in a water goblet is just divine. Something about taking humble chocolate pudding and putting it in a stemmed glass….
Raspberry Passion Fruit Sorbet
  • 3 cups frozen raspberries
  • 2 passion fruits
  • 1 mango
  • 1 banana
  • 2 unsoaked medjools
  • Optional: pineapple or any other fruits you like
Do this sorbet in a Vita-Mix or blender.
I think creamy without lumps is ideal, but hey, some people like lumps!
Success Story – Doman Intelligence Program
Posted on 22nd November 2010 in Natural health for children
DOMAN INTELLIGENCE PROGRAM
My friend Geralyn told me this story about her son Lucas – this really is an amazing achievement for any child of 3!
In July, Lucas began showing an interest in my older son’s interactive map of the USA. In a very short period of time, he was able to point to all states upon request. Last week (at 3 years 2 months of age) we took out our map of the USA puzzle and dumped all of the states on the floor. Lucas was able to put the puzzle back together independently in under 10 minutes. If he picked up a state that was not surrounded by other pieces, he knew exactly where to place the state on the board. As an occupational therapist I thought this feat was impressive enough until we got to the states of Alaska and Hawaii. They were positioned under the map for display, not geographically correct. Lucas wouldn’t put them in the puzzle. When I prompted him that was where the states went, he told me “no.”
As an occupational therapist, I am stunned by Lucas’s ability to not only remember the geography but to generalize it to a different “environment” where the expectations are different.The puzzle itself would challenge my nine year old son and it is one more achievement in a long list that leaves me surprised by Lucas’s ability to learn. Memory and generalization of skill are two of the most common problems in the cognitive skills of persons with Down Syndrome and they are two of Lucas’s biggest strengths.
I posted a video of Lucas doing his interactive map on my blog www.thedownsyndromeactionplan.blogspot.com and fb group by the same name. I am hoping to get a video of him doing the puzzle soon!
Success Story – this little boy no longer stutters thanks to NAET!
Posted on 18th November 2010 in Natural health for children
What a fantastic and inspiring story. This email came to me from a mother who lives here in Melbourne and was fortunate enough to be able to take her son to the same practitioner we used for our little boy. NAET is one of the modalities* we used for Gryffin which had profound and often very rapid effects.
My book explains in detail how and why we used NAET for Gryffin, and it also explains in laymans terms how NAET works to address different parts of the body.
Huge thanks to Nicole for sharing this story and for allowing me to publish it. And congratulations Max!
x Kristen.
“Max started stuttering due to quite a traumatic event. He couldn’t even get one word out, and would eventually give up and cover his mouth to stop the repetitions.  It was terrible to watch and very stressful for all of us especially Max. We took Max to see Maria for some NAET treatments and this played a huge role in pulling him out of it.  Every time we visited her he was immediately better than before. Back on track now after about 7 weeks so pretty quick recovery, considering he couldn’t even speak one word without stuttering and then he would just give up. We did use other treatments as well, but I have to say the NAET treatments had a massive impact on him and I don’t believe he would have come through this without it.” Nicole, Melbourne
*A modality is a therapy method, such as Osteopathy, Naturopathy or Nutrition.
‘…people should not be defined by their disabilities’
Posted on 16th November 2010 in Natural health for children
Today’s testimonial re Naturally Better -
This book is a breath of fresh air. I worked for 8 years in disability services and it was apparent that the disability was the thing that defined the treatment of these people. Through Kristen’s tireless research, she has given Gryffin the best start to life and has shown that people should not be defined by their disabilities. I only hope that all people in the disability field read this book and reflect on their practice. It can only make a positive effect for the people that they work with if they do!!
ADHD is associated with a ‘western dietary pattern’ in adolescents
Posted on 15th November 2010 in Natural health for children
It will be surprising for some but not for others that a recent study, published by the Journal of Attention  Disorders, shows an association – in adolescents – between ADHD and the consumption  of ‘Western style’ diets.
Here are the findings:
Results: Data were available for 1,799 adolescents, and a total of 115 adolescents had an ADHD diagnosis. Two major dietary patterns were identified: “Western” and “Healthy.” A higher score for the Western dietary pattern was associated with ADHD diagnosis (odds ratio = 2.21, 95% confidence interval = 1.18, 4.13) after adjusting for known confounding factors from pregnancy to 14 years. ADHD diagnosis was not associated with the “Healthy” dietary pattern.
Conclusion:
A Western-style diet may be associated with ADHD.
So, once again a big thumbs up for the raw, wholegrain, wholesome diet – just like our grandparents.
You can read details of the study here:
Vitamins in the fridge?
Posted on 9th November 2010 in Natural health for children
I could stock a small health food store with the amount of vitamin supplements and homeopathics I have in my house. But at this time of the year – with the first burst of warmer weather, I put them all back in the fridge for 6 months. Supplements don’t like to warm up beyond a certain point, and homeopathics are even more sensitive, so it’s not worth the risk of leaving them in the pantry. (especially in our non-air conditioned kitchen!)
So, after our first dose of summer weather today, they’re all back in the fridge – and I’m going to have to start looking around for an eco-friendly cool room I think. My stocks have grown over winter!
Success Story – Osteopathy eased this little boy’s Apnoea
Posted on 8th November 2010 in Natural health for children
About a month ago I received an email from a mother who had read my book and wanted some help with her son, Lester – 8 months old.  Lianne had been told that Lester would have to have his adenoids out to relieve constant ‘stuffiness’ and trouble breathing at night. At only 8 months old, Lianne was concerned this was too early for such a major operation and was looking for some natural alternatives.
Based on experiences with my son, I told Lianne what I would do, as did a couple of the other parents who have read my book and are taking the natural approach.
The last thing Lianne tried was a visit to an Osteopath. With Lianne’s permission, I’m quoting from her email to me and I hope it can help other families too!
Tuesday was a bit of a whirlwind. It was bizarre as it felt like we drove down for 3hrs and drove back for 3hrs just for someone (actually in my fatigued mind I used the word fruit loop) to put their hands on Lesters head for 30 mins. We walked out feeling kinda bemused about the whole ordeal. On the drive home I was thinking -well we had to do it- otherwise I would have always wondered if I should have taken him and missed out on an opportunity- that would be have been worse.
During the evening I checked on Lester as I usually do and was amazed. Actually to be truthful I panicked as I couldn’t hear any snoring or heaving snuffly breathing. I put my hand over his nose and he was breathing -like a well baby- not like a piggy wiggy. I was amazed in the whole 9 months I have never seen Lester sleep so quietly and peacefully!
The next morning he was a little snuffly but there was a definite improvement. I don’t know how or completely understand the treatment- but it has without a doubt – worked!
The letter came in from the hospital today- to get Lesters adenoids out in 3 weeks. I have been losing sleep over this decision. I mean the Docs havent even xrayed him- how do they know this is what is making him snuffly? My doubts are due to the fact that the Doc said they were only going to do it because we had to operate for grommets anyway so may as well take them out- now he dosent need that op- yet they still want to operate ????
I cant find a good Doc for a second opinion- after countless calls they all say he has DS therefore he needs the op. Thats like saying I am female therefore I like to shop!
We have decided to postpone the Op- God I hope we are making the right decision. Im going to go with what my instincts are telling me- they havent been wrong yet.
Lianne, thank you so much for letting me share this. I just feel it is so important for other parents to read what is possible so they can make informed choices for their children. And well done Lester!!
x
NB. The Osteopathic method we used includes Cranial Sacral Therapy, which is very gentle work on the plates in the skull. If you are looking for an Osteo or a Chiropractor, best ask if they have done this kind of work with children, as there are several different approaches. In USA, the Osteopathic method required is referred to as OMT – Osteopathic Manipulative Therapy, but again make sure they have done cranial work with kids.
