My newest friend

I really wasn’t anticipating the relationships which would come with this internet project of mine. I’ve had websites with previous businesses and I greatly valued the relationships I developed with my contacts via the web.  But there is an extra element to this experience with NBK which blows me away.  Every day.

I am moved by the power we have to break down barriers and cut to the chase with a conversation so much more easily when we are talking about the health of our children.  My growing collection of friends online is very dear to me as we share our common goal to help our kids to get better, naturally.

Last week I received a message from my newest friend, Geralyn Spiesz – Buffalo, New York.

Dear Kristen,
My son Lucas will turn three in three weeks and has DS. I was astonished when I saw your documentary. I am a Master’s level Occupational Therapist and I too dealt with much in the early days by submersing myself in research. Everything from vitamins, antioxidants, supplementations, the Institutes, Tomatis and early literacy I too have introduced to Lucas as an infant. Today, his pediatrician is astounded, though not willing to place the successes on our chosen path. Lucas taught himself the map of the US with my older son’s interactive map. He can read over 250 words, and his last cognitive test was within normal limits with his biggest strengths memory and ability to learn new material.

I hope you know this comes from a very genuine place, I love you and your family – this road is exciting and lonely. I cannot wait to devour your book and look forward with anticipation our next great discovery! Geralyn

With Geralyn’s permission, I have included a photo of her beautiful Lucas.

Geralyn is right – it is extraordinarily lonely to forge your own path for your child, disregarding the barrage of negative forecasts which comes with a diagnosis like Down syndrome. For me, this loneliness has been replaced by an underworld of conversation with likeminded mothers across the globe, between 10pm and midnight!  But to find a like minded person on the other side of the planet, who has had such a similar experience to ours, is powerful.  And wonderful!
